Favorite Field Trips

I taught 4th grade for nine years, and one of my favorite things to teach was Texas History.  We would end the unit with a field trip to downtown San Antonio to the.....mall?  Yes, that was one of our stops.  Not for the shopping, but to go to the IMAX Theatre and watch "Alamo:  The Price of Freedom".  The movie showed a lot of the events that we had discussed in class.  We also went to The Alamo.  The kids would have a scavenger hunt that would take them around the different parts of the Alamo.  The rest of the time was spent wandering around the grounds looking at everything at their own pace.

Before the field trip, we would also read the book called The Alamo Cat.  It was based on the true story of a cat who made its home at The Alamo.  The cat eventually died and was buried on the grounds of The Alamo.  I knew where Ruby (The Alamo Cat) was buried, but I made my kids find it without my help.

My son is now in 4th grade, but they no longer visit The Alamo for the field trip.  So when it cools down
(A LOT), I plan on taking him on a mother-son field trip to the IMAX/Alamo.

Here are some pictures from our field trip in 2006.

We studied William B. Travis...."Victory or Death"!

Ever heard of the Bowie knife?

Davy, Davy Crockett!
These are some of the flags that have flown over Texas.

WORDS you should KNOW

Yes, it is Saturday, and yes, I was up at school working with LOTS of my teacher buddies.

Today I worked on "WORDS you should KNOW".    Last year, my word wall was getting very tight because I was trying to fit over 200 words on it.  This year I decided to only put the 1st grade words on the word wall.  The words they SHOULD already know now have their own area next to my word wall.  I got this idea from somewhere in blogworld, but have no idea where, so if it was you....THANKS!

Top 3 Things Linky Party

What are the top 3 things you want to work on this year?

Simply 2nd Resources

1.  Reading:  I know that's very broad, but after reading The Book Whisperer and Daily 5, I feel like I need to rethink and revamp how I've been teaching reading.

2.  Math:  Two words:  Math Stations!

3.  Technology:  There is so much technology avaible to us, and I want to learn how to use more of it in my classroom.

How To Hyperlink on Comments

Have you ever wondered how people linked to their blog when leaving a comment?
I have, and I finally found out how to do it!

You can create your own hyperlink using this recipe:
<a href="THE URL OF THE SITE">The text you want to see as the link</a>

So mine would look something like this:
<a href="http://quenchyourfirst.blogspot.com">Quench Your First</a>

Thanks to The Kinder Kid for sharing this info!
