Favorite Field Trips

I taught 4th grade for nine years, and one of my favorite things to teach was Texas History.  We would end the unit with a field trip to downtown San Antonio to the.....mall?  Yes, that was one of our stops.  Not for the shopping, but to go to the IMAX Theatre and watch "Alamo:  The Price of Freedom".  The movie showed a lot of the events that we had discussed in class.  We also went to The Alamo.  The kids would have a scavenger hunt that would take them around the different parts of the Alamo.  The rest of the time was spent wandering around the grounds looking at everything at their own pace.

Before the field trip, we would also read the book called The Alamo Cat.  It was based on the true story of a cat who made its home at The Alamo.  The cat eventually died and was buried on the grounds of The Alamo.  I knew where Ruby (The Alamo Cat) was buried, but I made my kids find it without my help.

My son is now in 4th grade, but they no longer visit The Alamo for the field trip.  So when it cools down
(A LOT), I plan on taking him on a mother-son field trip to the IMAX/Alamo.

Here are some pictures from our field trip in 2006.

We studied William B. Travis...."Victory or Death"!

Ever heard of the Bowie knife?

Davy, Davy Crockett!
These are some of the flags that have flown over Texas.

Do you have a favorite field trip?  If so, head on over to Kinders on the Block and join the linky party!

  1. Great trip idea. My favourite isn't nearly as educational. I like the spooky pumpkin farm down the road from my house :)

  2. Thanks for joining my linky party and I am a new follower. I am sorry that the 4th graders do not go on this field trip... it seems like an awesome trip. I've been trying to just get myself to San Antonio for a little vacation but can't seem to figure out a time to go when it isn't so hot. And I already had the Alamo on my to-do list. Thanks:)
