Jumpstart's Read for the Record

Sit down to read. Stand up for children.

Millions of children in low-income neighborhoods are at risk of school failure before they even start kindergarten. Jumpstart's Read for the Record®, presented in partnership with the Pearson Foundation, allows Americans to demand that all children receive the quality early education they deserve.
On October 6, 2011, more than 2 million voices will call for an end to America's early education achievement gap by reading Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney – setting a world record in the process! Sit down to read in your community. You'll be standing up for children everywhere!

Head on over to Read for the Record to sign up or for more information.

O.R.E.O.

Did you and your class join in the OREO fun?  Check out my earlier post, with pictures, from our  Deliciously Fun Day !  Here is the paper I made for the Sink or Float science activity.

OREO Sink or Float

I'm having trouble downloading the paper I used for the writing, but basically it was:
"If you give ____ an Oreo...."  The kids had to finish the sentence and illustrate it.  I put all their pages together and made a book titled If You Give A Student An Oreo.

Who wants an O.R.E.O.?

WOW!  We had such a great time with our O.R.E.O. project! Visit http://projectsbyjen.com/Projects/2011oreo/2011oinformation.html to learn more about it.

STATION #1: Oreo Stacking
The kids (and adults) had two attempts to make a tower of Oreos.  The goal was to use as many Oreos as possible before it tipped over.

STATION #2:  Sink or Float?
The students made their predictions, then tested the Oreos to see if they would sink...or float.

STATION #3:  "If You Give (Student Name) a Cookie" Writing
A parent read the book, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, while the kids got to eat a few Oreos.  Afterwards, the students wrote and illustrated the sentence, "If you give (Student Name) an Oreo, then he'll want ____________".

STATION #4: Oreo Math:
Students completed word problems/graphing work all about Oreos.

I will try and add the Sink or Float and writing papers I made soon.  I left them at school...of course.

Have a great weekend!!

Teen Numbers

The teen numbers can be a tricky concept for students to understand.  Here is a song that a friend from school shared with me that I have been using to help my kids understand the "teens".  Maybe you will be able to use it with your kids too!
